You love the open road wind in your hair feeling, but what if you have an accident are you insured? Did you know it is the law in Pennsylvania you must have motorcycle insurance?
If you have an accident, or get stopped by an officer, and you aren’t covered you could be fined $300, have your registration suspended for 3 months and/or have your license suspended for 3 months! How is that wind in your hair open road feeling feel now?
Are you one of those riders who thinks they don’t need coverage because they only ride a few times a year, have never been in an accident, or don’t think it would cost much to fix their bike? Rest assured it only takes one accident where you are at fault or not for reality to hit your wallet!
The minimum coverage according to PennDOT is:
$15,000 of bodily injury protection for injuries or death occurring to one person in an accident.
$30,000 of bodily injury protection for injuries or deaths occurring to more than one person in an accident.
$5,000 of property damage protection for a single accident
$30,000 of bodily injury protection for injuries or deaths occurring to more than one person in an accident.
$5,000 of property damage protection for a single accident
Consider for just a moment you are out for a lovely Sunday ride when that tire you thought would make a few more miles blows out, taking you for the ride of a lifetime into a parked car, tossing you across it’s hood to the ground. You are now looking at major repairs to an auto and most likely yourself; that few hundred dollars you saved by not having insurance has now become thousands you must pay out of pocket! Also, keep in mind you could be eligible for a multiple policy discount for having your auto and/or home and/or motorcycle insurance all with the same carrier on the same policy!
Don't forget the minimums PennDOT requires are just that minimums; most motorcycles on the road today are expensive to repair, and the cost of a visit to an emergency room can run from several hundred to several thousand dollars. Your agent is the best person to consult when determining how much coverage is right for you, but remember coverage is not only a good idea it is the law in Pennsylvania.
