Packages, gifts, shopping bags…we all do it, toss them in our trunk, in the back-seat, on the passenger side floor, then run into a store for one last errand…what happens when you come out and they are GONE!

It is that time of year, we are getting ready for the holidays and that means running errands during a lunch hour, on the weekend, after work, whenever and however we can fit them in. That is what thieves are hoping; that you won’t be paying attention, that you are too busy to lock that door, or to hide your newly bought items. Are you covered? You should be!

If you have an auto policy they will not be covered, as they are considered “personal property,” but they would be covered under your homeowner / renters insurance policy. A study done by the Insurance Agents & Brokers of America found that 44% of people asked had experienced theft, but of those only 40% said they were covered.

What happens when you are out and about and your wallet or purse get stolen? Those too are covered by your homeowners / renters insurance policy. And if you have identity theft you will be protected against anyone accessing your personal information.

Good shopping practices to adhere to this time of year include:

1. Don’t put your receipt in the bag with your purchase
2. Park in well lit areas
3. Carry your purse or wallet where it is hard for someone to grab
4. Don’t carry more cash, id or credit than you need
5. Hide your purchases and move your car as you shop
6. Remember to lock your doors

Coverage is important, so be sure to go over your coverage with your agent before the holidays provide you with a lump of coal. Ask about your deductible along with your coverage’s, as the deductible can be higher than the cost of what you lost. Contact your agent today before the holiday rush!
