Summer is the best time of year for taking a much needed
vacation away from work and the daily stressors of life. In today’s technological age smart phones
have replaced cameras for documenting activities and experiences. Social Media
outlets give us the opportunity to share are special moments with friends,
family and others who choose to follow us. With a snap of a photo and posting
it for all to see, not only does it provide instant feedback but it can also
cause problems that could have been prevented.
Imagine coming home from vacation, opening your front
door only to find you have been burglarized! Your first reaction to the damages
immediately takes away from the joyful vacation you just had. Now it is time to
pick up the pieces after you have reported it to the police and hope the
culprit(s) are caught. Next step is trying to recover your losses. What will it
cost you to become whole again? Does your insurance cover your damages? Do you
even have insurance for your valuables?
Some things are
irreplaceable while other stolen property may take you some time to replace.
All of this could have been avoided had you secured your valuables with good
insurance or maybe not displaying your vacation as it happened on social media.
It lets everyone know you aren’t at home and criminals can plan their break-in.
Most people do not
think of these little things but they are very important to be conscious about.
Did you know an average home invasion can cost up to
$20,000 in victim’s losses and criminal expenditures? This figure doesn’t
include emotional damage. According to the FBI, the average dollar loss is over
$2,000 per burglary. Arming your home with a security system costs far less if
you have taken the initiative to protect your property before a break-in.
Purchasing a home security system, motion sensors and
cameras after the invasion occurred may deter burglars from reentering your
home- but the damage was already done. The good thing to know is most insurance
companies will offer you a discounted rate on your home insurance if you have a
system in place for preventative measures.
While all this information is good to know, the point of
it all is be mindful about posting your whereabouts on social media, especially
if you are away on vacation for a period of time- giving criminals the chance
to violate your space and sense of security.
