DIY CAN ALSO MEAN DOING IT TO YOURSELF!

Do it yourself has championed the retail and institution market place over the past decade.  Some of the reasons have been practical. You can get the information you want on your time schedule and at your convenience.  It's great for getting status on matters, obtaining documents, getting messages out, paying bills...all of those things that we have to fit into our busy schedule. With access to the internet, they can now be done when you are finally home from the gym or have gotten the kids to bed.

However, be wary about not getting an advocate's advice on matters such as actually placing your insurance coverage in effect.  Insurance is very complex - after all it is written contract law.  Many people don't know the difference between limited and full tort or what uninsured or under insured  motorist coverage provides or what the highest and best choice is for selecting how medical bills and income loss will be addressed.  If I just mentioned a few items where you were thinking...hey, I am not so sure...You need an advocate...an agent.

In this culture of Do It Yourself service seeking...be wise....use those tools which can help you and don't cripple yourself trying to make decisions that a professional advisor should be unpacking for you.

Here are the reasons why:

Did you know that when you buy your insurance online that there is absolutely NO premium savings for doing it directly with the company?  It is the same premium that you would pay assuming the same coverage was selected by you and an agent.

Did you know that if you do happen to be in a pinch and have to do this sort of transaction online that you can transfer your business to a local agent at no additional cost?

Did you know that the most professional advice comes from an actual agency that wants to have you as a client and to establish a lasting relationship with you versus some company telephone representative whom you will never speak with again?

It is that personal relationship you build with your agent that matters most. As your agent get to know you and your needs, you get to know them and can tell if they are the right fit for you and your needs.

DIY is great for servicing needs but may not be ideal for initial coverage placement.  The cost for having an agent can be priceless....it could be that you have an extra $100,000 of medical bill coverage where you were only going to have $5,000 allowing you to get the right kind of physical therapy after an auto accident.
Consider  were badly injured by an uninsured driver who has no assets and now you have recourse through your own auto benefits to help pay for costs associated with future medical or mobility problems.  You have the right to sue another party for injuries because you have full tort.  It could be that you get to keep your home because you had the right liability limits or that you have a rental car when your car was badly damaged in an accident so that you can get to work and run your household.

(DIY) Do it yourself options do not necessarily mean you made the right decision. It can mean that you made a decision based on what you thought were right at the time.

When it is time to file a claim, you really find out what type of coverage you are paying more for in the long run. Don’t do it to yourself.
