Been in an accident – do you really know what you should do – maybe not!

There are more than 20,000 accidents a day (per the US Census Bureau 2009), more likely than not you have been in one at some point in your driving life time. Did you know what information to gather? Did you know what to say or do? Did you know who to call?

First and foremost don’t move the vehicles until either the police arrive or you have thoroughly documented the incident with your camera. It is very important to get a picture of the license plate, that way you are sure you have the correct number for future identification.

Now be sure to get the police to your location; so many people don’t realize without a police report, you may be required to pay your deductible or worse! So call 911 and make sure that an officer comes out to take a report. Keep in mind they will not come out if all parties are mobile and no one is injured, how do you know no one is injured you most likely are not a doctor. The police will not come out if the cars are drivable; how do you know if your vehicle is drivable unless you are a mechanic. So be sure to get that report.

What information do you need? Most of us know to take down the license number, and insurance information, but did you think to get info from the witnesses who saw the accident? Witnesses can help you make your case if need be. And be sure to get the officers name and badge number, as well as a report number.
