We all love our pets. We all believe they will never harm anyone, but what if they do?
Recently an acquaintance was forced to choose between her home/renters insurance or getting rid of her beloved dog. What did she do, kept her dog and signed on with a different insurer.
How did she end up in this predicament, and how can you avoid the same dilemma.
She ended up in this situation because someone reached out to her leashed obedience trained dog, while he was still on her premises, scaring the dog who reacted by nipping the hand that was reaching for him. The injured party filed a police report, unbeknownst to the dog owner, stating the dog was unprovoked. It was not until much later that the dog owner learned of the police report and the claim that had been filed against her, too late for her to do anything.
How can you prevent a similar challenge, be PROACTIVE! The minute your dog does any action that could be construed as a danger or harmful call the police yourself. We all have camera phones take pictures of any evidence from the bite to property damage to where the incident occurred. Were there witnesses? If so ask them to stick around and provide the officer with a statement if they can’t wait get a good phone number, email and even address so the Police can follow up with them later.
It only takes one seemingly innocent mistake to put you in a position of having to face removing your pet or even putting it down! Remember to be proactive, even if you think the incident is minor and the injured party won’t report it, in our litigious society you just never know; being proactive is your insurance against losing your beloved.
